I love when clients come back year after year! I have watched their 2 littles grow each year. I first started photographing this family when their littlest was a baby!! We did this session on a blvd in Lethbridge that has amazing trees on it! In the spring the trees have beautiful pink and white flowers. We also did this session in October and if you can believe it, I was wearing shorts and a tank due to it being so warm out, which is basically unheard of in October around here!!! Unique Photo Session Ideas You’ll Love

There is nothing quite like capturing memories with your loved ones. Are you someone who enjoys taking beautiful pictures of yourself and your family? Then you are probably always on the lookout for inspiration for your next photo session. Below are some unique photo ideas that you’ll love.

Family history. Are you a fan of the photos that your grandparents or even great grandparents have taken? Why not replicate them yourself? All it takes is a bit of editing and you can achieve the same look and feel.
First and last day of school. For the first day of school, get some fun pictures of your child getting ready. You can then do the same on the day that they graduate from high school so that you can create an amazing “before and after” picture. You can even choose to add on college photos later.
Generational photos. Photos are one of those items that are passed down through generations so why not create one that future family members can treasure. Take a photo with your daughter, mom, and grandma to show the generations of women in your family or any other mix of family members that you want to place in a picture together.
Pregnancy pictures. There are many fun ways to show your progress through pregnancy and documenting it with photos is the perfect way to capture this time in your life. Years from now you’ll be able to take your child through your journey before you got to meet them and share that special moment with them.

Pet portraits. If your pet is a member of your family then capturing memories with them is just as important. There are so many great ways to take some amazing photos whether it’s outside at a park or in the comfort of your own home.
Save the date. Getting married in the near future? Taking a quirky couple photo where your wedding date is displayed is a lovely way to invite people to your wedding. You can do anything from writing the date on the bottom of your shoes to using chalkboards or balloons to display the date.
Gender reveal. Why not make finding out the gender of your baby a fun surprise for everyone by turning it into a fun photo that you can send around. Some cute ideas include releasing pink or blue balloons out of a box or you could incorporate a cute color frame to hold around your belly.

My poor second shooter hit a deer on her way to the ceremony but still made it in time, with her Dad coming to her rescue and driving her to the ceremony in Lethbridge. Readymade 4-H Multi-Club Show and Sale

A Brief Guide to Professional Photo Restrictions

The photos that a photographer hands over to you are part of their life’s work. It has their name or branding so there are a few important restrictions to note when it comes to the professional digital images that you receive.

1) Copyright. The digital images that your photographer provides you with have a copyright, which means the photographer has the option to use those photos to market their work and services anytime in the future. We are however also respectful of our clients so if there are any images that you would prefer to keep private, it’s best to let us know about it ahead of time so that we can honor your wishes.

2) Image type. We aren’t able to provide you with the original files or raw images. All images given to the client have been cropped and have been edited. If you do require further touch-ups we would need to provide you with a quote.

3) Image altering. While we appreciate your business and welcome the sharing of our photos on social media platforms, we ask that the images not be altered in any way as this is against our copyright policies.

What constitutes image altering?

Adding filters or editing photos in Photoshop
Removing our logo or studio name
Color correcting or including transitions from color to black and white
Clipping people or objects out of the original shot

So why do we have this as a restriction? Our photos are a representation of our work so when a customer alters an image it directly impacts our name and brand in the industry. When we present you with the final images, they have already been through our editing process and don’t require further alterations. When images are altered, the results are not always reflective of our original work and can then be mistaken for ours. We greatly appreciate your loyalty and cooperation in this matter.

We are happy to give a quote if you want images to be edited in a specific way or if you want further alterations made.

Surviving a Family Photoshoot

How to make your next family photo session a stress-free one.

Family photos are truly timeless and such a great keepsake for future generations. Getting the family together to take those perfect portraits can turn into chaos if not approached correctly. There is usually a lot more to consider when it comes to a family photoshoot since there are members of all ages, which means that there is some extra coordination involved.

Below are some family photoshoot ideas and tips to keep you and your loved ones calm and smiling the whole way through.

Timing is everything. If you have younger children involved in the shoot, try and arrange the photoshoot at a time when they would be well-rested. A rested child makes for happy photos. On that note, make sure that all family members have gotten enough sleep the night before as this helps with the fun and relaxation aspects of the session.
Dos and don’ts of bribery. Get your family excited about the photoshoot instead of offering a reward in return for their cooperation. This tends to lead to forced smiles and an irritated bunch of people. If you do have small children coming along it’s not a bad idea to give the photographer some bribery options in the form of toys or small food items to make those difficult moments a little easier.
Relinquish control. As much as you’ll want to direct your children on where to stand and how to pose, it’s best to leave that to the photographer as they know what works best. Not having this pressure will also make you feel more relaxed.
It’s not just about the posing. The best photos happen when you’re having fun so joke and play with your children, hold your partner’s hand and just let the moments happen.
Plan ahead. Discuss all of your requirements with your photographer beforehand so that the family photo session can just flow. Let your photographer know if you want specific pictures taken.
Keep those sugar levels up. If everyone is well fed, the photoshoot will also run a lot smoother. It’s also not a bad idea to take a few snacks and some water along for those who might need it.

After the ceremony, we headed down to the Wilderness Park in Fort Macleod to do their family and extended family portraits. Choosing the Right Props for Your Next Photo Session

Have you ever thought about adding props to your photo sessions? Props can add interest, depth, and an extra flair to your pictures. Get your children to hold coordinating flowers for a spring or summer shoot. Love sports? Then use baseball bats in your next family photo to bring out your passion. Here are a few tips for ways to incorporate props in your next photo session.

Avoid trends. While you might have recently seen a few photos that incorporate a specific prop, try not to use something that will not look really dated in 20 years’ time. Classic is definitely better and there are many fun options to choose from.
Be realistic. It’s easy to go wild when thinking of a theme for your photo session. You should decide on one that you can actually find props for. For example, if you want to use seasonal props, try and source them in that season as they’ll be easier to find, and before you decide to remake your favorite movie scene, think twice about whether you’ll be able to find suitable outfits for everyone in the photo.
Size matters. There are some larger props that work really well in photo sessions such as using your grandpa's farm tractor as a background piece. However, there are some larger props that can take away from the beauty of the photograph altogether. Make sure that your prop enhances the photo and doesn't detract from it.
Make it meaningful. If your child has a favorite stuffed animal or if you have a musical instrument that you treasure, try and incorporate it into your photos. This way your pictures will have more meaning to you and your family.
Use what you have. Make the current season work to your advantage by using what’s available. Leaves in the fall make for amazing props in photos and don’t cost a thing.

Remember, using props can be the perfect addition to your photos but make sure that they don’t become the main focus.

A Guide to Posing for Your Family Photos

The key to taking genuine and authentic family photos is knowing how to pose in front of the camera.

If you’ve never taken professional family photos before or if you simply want to improve on your last session, here is some advice on how to pose that will leave you with exceptional images.

Get Close

The last thing you want is a family portrait that looks stiff and awkward. The secret to creating a beautiful, intimate family photo is to get close. Snuggle up with the people you love if you want the best photos. If there are people of varying heights in the photo, take a few photos on the same level so that you can get your heads close together too.

Have Fun

Your photos always look more authentic when your family is genuinely having fun and laughing. Spend time talking about your favorite vacation or a memory that makes you all laugh out loud. These candid moments always make for the best photos.

Keep it Natural

When you overthink posing, it takes away from the genuineness of your photos, which is why it helps to shoot your family photos in a setting where you’re all comfortable and where you can go about your lives as naturally as possible. For example, if you’re in an outdoor setting, take your little one for a walk. If you’re shooting at home, bake something together or snuggle up for a story.

Use Your Surroundings

Very often, standing upright in the middle of a room or garden will make your photos look and feel stiff. Use your surroundings to make yourselves more comfortable. For example, if there’s a wall in the vicinity, lean up against it. If there’s a couch available, pose on that for a few shots.

Make Use of Props

If you would like to change things up a bit or give a younger child something to do, you can also always incorporate a few basic props into your photos to get a few non-standard shots.

Top 5 Tips for Making a Photo Session with Kids Easier

If you’re preparing for a photo session with your children, you may be feeling a bit apprehensive. Children aren’t always easy to deal with, which is why the below tips will definitely come in handy before your upcoming photo session.

1. Don't make a huge deal out of it. If you're stressed out and cranky, your kids will usually pick up on it and act accordingly. Their behavior will usually be better if you are relaxed and having fun. You may have to make some compromises to keep the peace such as letting your energetic daughter's hair stay straight instead of curling it because she won't sit still. Focus on the big picture and don't sweat the small stuff.

2. Make it fun. Let the kids have a couple of “fun pictures” where they get to pick their own pose or props. You get to keep the more serious photos while they get to keep their silly photos. This way everyone wins. If you are struggling to get your kids to sit still, turn the photo session into a game. Simon Says usually works like a charm.

3. Be prepared. If you're going to be out for several hours, ensure that your children are well-rested and have had their naps. Bringing some snacks and activities along is also a great idea. If you are having your own photos taken too then you might want to bring a babysitter or family member along to watch the kids. If you happen to be shooting in a remote location, you never know when you might need something like bug spray, tissues, or a first aid kit so bring that along too. 4. Be patient. Save your sanity by trying not to control the photo session too much. Sometimes the best photos come from kids just doing their own thing. Work with your photographer and your photos will look fantastic.

5. Have a chat. Get your children talking to both you and the photographer about topics such as school or their favorite songs. This allows them to feel more comfortable around your photographer and will also give your photographer a chance to capture a few candid and cute expressions.

How to Find the Perfect Photo Shoot Location

Choosing a photoshoot location might seem like a big deal but it really doesn't have to be difficult. A location usually drives some of the other decisions you will need to make about your shoot so it’s important to choose the right place. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before you decide on a location:

What kind of theme do I want? If a particular building or natural backdrop would work well with your theme, look around your area for spots that meet your requirements. If you don't know what kind of backdrop you want, take an afternoon drive around your city for inspiration. It's easy to overlook beautiful spots that are practically in your backyard. Ask family, friends, or your photographer for ideas too.

Are you allowed to take pictures there? Make sure that you can legally take pictures at the location that you have in mind. If it's not public property or available to the public you will need to get permission first.

Is it accessible? Consider that not all outdoor locations may be available all year round or you might not be able to get to them at all. Your safety is also an important aspect to think about before you decide on a location. Taking pictures on a mountain ledge may look neat but it’s best not to put yourself in harm’s way.

How do you get to your location? Will it be easy to walk to the session location and if not, are you able to change your clothing and touch up your hair and makeup before the shoot? You should also find out whether there is a restroom that’s close enough in case you need it.

Will the photo session be in a public place? If the location you have chosen has a lot of foot traffic, you need to ask yourself whether you are comfortable being photographed in front of others. If not, you might want to rethink your choice of location.

Make sure that your location doesn’t become a distraction and that there is shelter nearby if you need it. Your location tells a story so it’s worthwhile to choose a meaningful spot.

The last time I did a session with this family, they were actually expecting baby number 3! Well, he is no longer a baby, but well into his toddler years!! Cherise is from a small community in Sask. and was born and raised on a farm! Derek is from a small community here, and they wanted their session to have that farm feel to it! I knew the exact spot to go! I have shot a few times at this place and it is beautiful. The property has a big old red barn with lots of other little barns and grain bins. The backdrops are endless. Little Miss R is a sweet addition to this sweet family. Mr. K had been patiently waiting for her arrival for some time, as well as her Mom and Dad. She sure looks like her big brother did when he was a baby. I love doing newborn lifestyle sessions as everyone feels more comfortable in their own home, and siblings feel better about it too. It was a chilly, windy morning on thanksgiving weekend. I actually still can't believe we haven't had snow yet and there were still some leaves on the trees, but we had some beautiful fall colors. Ashleigh got in contact with me for this session, as they were gifting it to their parents for their wedding anniversary. It was a great time and we all had lots of laughs! Did we not have a beautiful September!! I love fall family sessions. This sweet family had me over again in their backyard for their session, only this time there were a few more kids to add to the mix. We had lots of fun playing in the leaves. We raked the leaves, the girls jumped into them and we would rake again. We even got out the blower, to blow some of the leaves around. Where do I even begin with this session!! It was amazing, we headed downtown to take some around the older buildings, and then we got to head to Spitz stadium for the rest of the session as baseball was a huge part of Nolan and his family's life!! A Beautiful Spring Day.............{Miss B Turns 2}

It has been a beautiful March so far!! Vanessa contacted me to do a session with her little one who turned 2. We headed to Henderson park and boy did I get my workout in!! She was always on the move and loved to follow me around!! I did a lot of running backwards in hopes I would catch her pretty face!! I had a lot of fun with this sweet girl and her family!!

When Morgan contacted me to do a session for herself, I was happy to do it! We have been friends for the last couple years as we first got to know each other through soccer!! With COVID, we have not been able to play soccer in a year together!

I will say with COVID, it has pushed people to think outside the box in how they deliver their products and services. Just like other businesses, we photographers have had to adjust to changing situations, rules, and regulations. We are in the middle of a lockdown again and so is Manitoba, where this sweet family is from. Can you believe we can do a photo session over facetime! The pictures are nowhere near a DSLR camera quality, but they are a keepsake and you can print small prints. We did this session over Facetime, as well I coached them on how to take a couple of photos with their camera. It was a great time and I was happy we could do a session for their firstborn.

It was a beautiful evening at our farm and my sister wanted to come out and do a quick mini session with her family. They have done a session in every season so far and just needed some outside photos in the winter!! It turned out to be a beautiful evening and it was right in the middle of the massive snowstorms we were having at the beginning of the month. There was no wind, but I will say it was COLD!!! Poor little Miss. A's hand were freezing by the end of the session, but the kittys made up for that!!

I just love newborn lifestyle sessions! I love being able to come into your home and photograph your family just the way it is at that moment!! That is what you will remember. This sweet family invited me into their home during a crazy time in everyone's lives, during COVID. Although having a baby during a pandemic, doing lifestyle sessions has also made things tough.

When I come into your home to photograph you and your family, I mask up, wash hands, and be sure to have the parents do most of the touching, dressing, wrapping, and posing! I try to stay as hands-off as possible so that we try and keep everyone safe as possible! I will give you directions on how to pose, sit, hold your hands, etc.

Well we had a good run of beautiful fall weather!! The leaves have stayed on the trees so long this year, it's been great! It was a quick session as it was one of the coldest days we've had in October and they had a few littles that were in the shoot. Happy Thanksgiving! This has got to be one of the busiest weekends. Everyone is together with their families and because they are all together it's usually a great time for a big group portrait! This year I had a wedding over thanksgiving and this lovely family's session. They wanted their photos done on a farm yard of their friends. It was a beautiful location and I'm so glad the weather held out, because as we finished up the session and I started driving home it started pouring rain!!! A Wedding during a Pandemic........{Baker Wedding}

What does a Wedding look like during a pandemic? It's very small and intimate. I really like them!!!! I think this year was a reminder to everyone who was planning a wedding or who got married that you really don't need a really big party and all those fancy things, you just want the most important people there to share it with you. Throughout the year weddings have been able to have as many guests as 50 all the way to just 10! You figure out quite quickly who your special people are in your life. Don't get me wrong, I love a good wedding reception, but weddings aren't just about the party! It's about 2 people coming together to share and start a life together! The most important people you need there are the bride and groom, cause without them there is no wedding!

I was happy to see that Branden and Kelsie were able to keep there original day and they were able to celebrate it with all the people very close to them! It was also a beautiful day for Thanksgiving weekend. We usually get a snow storm around this time! We did the getting ready photos at the Brides house and the guys got ready at their Grandma's farm yard. That is were the ceremony was going to be held as well! Checkout the fun we had and I really hope you guys can still have your big party event in June 2021!!!! Congratulations!
